Real-time multilingual communication by means of prestored conversational units

چکیده
A computer mediated communication system has been developed which can offer real time multilingual communication, as long as users stay within the boundaries of prestored conversational units. The system was designed originally to give non-speaking people a multi-lingual capability. It is based on research into conversational modelling and utterance prediction, making use of prestored material. However, the system could also be used by people whose only communication disadvantage is not being able to speak a foreign language. The prototype consists of a large store of conversational texts, each one produced in several languages, along with a model of conversation which allows the system to link the items together into appropriate sequences. Both the non-speaking person and the communication partner use the communicator in their dialogue. In comparison with a multi-lingual phrase book, the system helped users to have more natural conversation, and to take more control of the interaction. This project is an interesting example of the way in which systems developed for people with severe disabilities can often have useful general

Multilingual Mobile-Phone Translation Services for World Travelers
This demonstration introduces two new multilingual translation services for mobile phones. The first translation service provides state-of-the-art text-to-text translations of Japanese as well as English conversational spoken language in the travel domain into 17 languages using statistical machine translation technologies trained automatically from a large-scale multilingual corpus. The second...
متن کاملTowards multilingual interoperability in automatic speech recognition
In this communication, we address multilingual interoperability aspects in speech recognition. After giving a tentative definition of multilingual interoperability, we discuss speech recognition components and their language-specific aspects. We give a sample overview of past multilingual speech recognition research and development across different speaking styles (read, prepared and conversati...
متن کاملComputer-assisted conversation for nonvocal people using prestored texts
The challenges faced by people who are severely physically impaired and nonspeaking are demonstrated by the fact that, even with current technology, the word rates that they can achieve using current communication systems tend to range from two to ten words per minute. Ways have been investigated in which prestored reusable texts might assist in improving the performance of such systems. Beginn...
متن کاملReflections on Jennifer Saul's View of Successful Communication and Conversational Implicature
Saul (2002) criticizes a view on the relationship between speaker meaning and conversational implicatures according to which speaker meaning is exhaustively comprised of what is said and what is implicated. In the course of making her points, she develops a couple of new notions which she calls “utterer-implicature” and “audience-implicature”. She then makes certain claims about the relationshi...
متن کاملA Real-time Motion Tracking Wireless System for Upper Limb Exosuit Based on Inertial Measurement Units and Flex Sensors (TECHNICAL NOTE)
This paper puts forward a real-time angular tracking (motion capture) system for a low cost upper limb exosuit based on sensor fusion; which is integrated by an elastic sleeve-mitten, two inertial measurement units (IMU), two flex sensors and a wireless communication system. The device can accurately detect the angular position of the shoulder (flexion-extension, abduction-adduction and interna...
